My son Tom Bishop completed Challenge Roth for his first long distance triathlon and came 2nd overall breaking the British Record previously held by Al Brownlee. It certainly was a fantastic achievement and one that we are all hugely proud about. The reason for writing this was Tom said that he felt he needed another month of training – came 2nd ? My reply back to him was that another month may have taken him over the prime and he may have plateaued. The fact that he came 2nd proves that he training was correct. I am aware that sometimes obstacles can get in the way of training before a race, but I so often hear I could have done better with another month of training. Could they? Would it have worked or over the top ? It can be difficult to get things right , but when you race go with the approach that I did the training that was realistic so let’s see how it goes. I am sure there will be both positives and negatives ( there always are) , note them down so you do not forget and that from them what you need into your next race. It may well not be ‘ another month’. It may be emphasise on different parts of the race : transition / run & walking as opposed to trying to continually run. Lots of research around this and the next article possibly. As always get in touch with any questions. Train safe and enjoy.
